Who Can Register a Marriage in Delhi?
Under the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014, all marriages solemnized in Delhi must be registered, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. You are eligible to register if:
- Either spouse holds an address proof of Delhi, or
- The marriage took place in Delhi
Marriage Registration Under the Hindu Marriage Act
Couples belonging to Hindu, Jain, or Buddhist religions can register under the Hindu Marriage Act. Sikh couples register under the Anand Marriage Act, which follows a similar process.
Key Eligibility Conditions:
- Groom must be at least 21 years old; bride at least 18 years
- Neither party should have a living spouse at the time of marriage
- Both parties must be of sound mind and capable of giving valid consent
- Parties must not fall within prohibited degrees of relationship

Marriage Registration Under the Special Marriage Act
Couples belonging to Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, as well as inter-religion couples, can register under the Special Marriage Act. This is also the route for court marriage in Delhi.
The process involves two stages:
- Serving Notice β The couple serves a notice of intention to marry at the Marriage Registrar’s office. This notice is displayed publicly for 30 days. Physical presence of both parties and witnesses is mandatory.
- Marriage Registration β If no objections are raised within 30 days, the couple appears before the Marriage Registrar for formal registration and issuance of the certificate.

Delhi Anand Marriage Registration
Under the Delhi Anand Marriage Act 2018 (in force since 8 February 2018), Sikh couples can register their marriage in the jurisdiction where either spouse resides or where the marriage was solemnized. The procedure mirrors the Hindu Marriage Act process.

- Signed marriage registration application form (both spouses)
- Date of birth proof – Matriculation Certificate, Passport, or Birth Certificate

- Aadhaar card of both husband and wife
- Affidavit stating date and place of marriage, date of birth, marital status, and nationality
- Two passport size photographs each + one marriage photograph
- Marriage invitation card
- Certificate from the priest (if married at a religious venue)
- One witness with Aadhaar and PAN card
- Divorce decree or death certificate of former spouse (if applicable)
- Conversion certificate (if applicable under Hindu Marriage Act)
- For foreigners: Single Status Certificate or NOC from the concerned Embassy
